Job Title: Postdoctoral Position in Behavioral Pharmacology
Employer: University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland
Description:

A postdoctoral position is open immediately (summer/fall 2012) on an NIH-funded research project concerning the behavioral pharmacology of lithium and other mood stabilizers used to treat bipolar disorder, depression, and suicidal behaviors. Studies will focus on characterizing the behavioral and biochemical effects of lithium in rats and mice on aggression and behaviors related to impulsivity and risk taking in operant tasks. Scientific approaches may include the use of transgenic mice, animal models of mood and anxiety disorders, automated behavioral analysis software, and stereotaxic surgery.

Requirements:

Our laboratory is broadly interested in preclinical studies of genes involved in human mood disorders and drugs used to treat these conditions (see www.gouldlab.org). Thus, additional techniques may include immunohistochemistry, PCR, western blot, electrophysiology, and pharmacogenetics. Experience in techniques to assess learning and performance in a variety of operant tasks, especially those ones related to measuring impulsivity and/or risk taking in rodents is essential, as are strong writing and communication skills and proficiency in English. Experience with some of the other techniques discussed above will be helpful, but not required. The successful candidate will play a lead role in designing and executing projects, writing publications and grants, and presenting data at professional conferences. Salary will be based on experience.
