Bulletin from NIMH: Funding During the Lean Years
11 December 2006. A special update from National Institute of Mental Health Director Thomas Insel, entitled "Fulfilling the Mission During the Lean Years,” has recently been posted to the NIMH website. Prepared for the 2006 annual meeting of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology in Hollywood, Florida, December 3- 7, the update sketches out NIMH intramural research programs and large-scale clinical trials such as the Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE; see SRF news story).
However, the focus is on several hot-button issues—guidelines for contacts between NIH scientists and industry, and especially NIH’s research strategy in light of the recent stagnation of federal funding (see related SRF news story). These issues are also covered in an article in the January issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry, coauthored by Insel and Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and Ting-Kai Li, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. We invite your comments on these issues.
